  • Mochi in Japan is both a traditional and favorite food used for New Year's celebration as a decoration and in ozoni (soup). It is a glutinous rice which traditionally is pounded with a wooden mortar. Fresh mochi is soft, like the refrigerated manju found in Pacific Mercantile's refrigerated section. However, mochi becomes hard in it's exposure to open air. At Pacific Mercantile, we sell these pre-packaged mochi which are cut in the rectangular shape.
  • Once you cook mochi, it will get very sticky. It is used in many dishes and we welcome your questions in its use and proper storing.
